Special Features:

The first release in the Mountains series, High Coast Mountains 01 Multråberget combines a fully peated Swedish single malt with a distinctive two-stage maturation. The whisky is just over eight years old, has a phenol content of 45 ppm and was bottled at 51% ABV in an edition of 6,000 bottles. It contains no added colour and is not chill-filtered.

The initial maturation lasted around five years and three months in bourbon casks. The whisky then spent just under three more years in Pedro Ximénez casks. The result balances the peat with the influence of the PX and bourbon casks.

The Mountains series builds on the idea behind High Coast Berg, which was matured in wine casks, and dedicates its four releases to mountains from the distillery's home region. Multråberget opens the series and lies upstream on the Ångermanälven near Sollefteå.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose brings together sultanas, peat smoke and vanilla pod.
• Palate: Candyfloss, raisins, pear and walnut emerge on the palate.
• Finish: Tobacco and vanilla shape the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

High Coast Distillery began producing whisky in 2010 in Bjärtrå on the Ångermanälven. Its unheated warehouses are exposed to the large northern Swedish temperature fluctuations between summer and winter as well as between day and night. In warmer conditions, the whisky expands and penetrates deeper into the oak; as the temperature and pressure fall, it recedes again. This cycle shapes the cask maturation.

For peated spirit, High Coast moves the distillation cuts later to retain more phenolic compounds. This produces less fruitiness and more pronounced notes of tobacco, liquorice and smoke. In Multråberget, this production style meets an almost three-year maturation in Pedro Ximénez casks.
