Silent Mills 03 – Svanö is the third peated release in the Silent Mills Collection. The series follows on from Timmer, the smoky release in the Origins range, and commemorates the forest industry of northern Sweden. This edition is named after the island of Svanö in the Ångermanälven river, where a sawmill was established in 1867 and a pulp mill in 1907.

All components of Silent Mills 03 – Svanö began maturation in bourbon casks. Whiskies accounting for 18% of the composition subsequently spent most of their maturation in new Swedish oak casks. The individual components were between 6.42 and 9.04 years old, with an average age of 8.38 years. Peated whisky at 40 to 46 ppm made up 91.1% of the composition.

The whisky was released on 13 April 2021 at 51%, with production limited to 6,674 bottles. It is uncoloured and non-chill-filtered.

The aromatic profile opens gently with pear, ginger and vanilla cream, while the peat remains delicate on the first nosing. Sweet peat smoke becomes more pronounced on the palate and then also grows stronger on the nose. Orange peel, nutmeg, vanilla and bread spices add further dimensions, while tobacco and liquorice shape the final impression.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals pear, ginger and vanilla cream, complemented by delicate peat, orange peel and nutmeg in a restrained aromatic profile.
• Palate: Sweet peat, vanilla with a hint of citrus and bread spices come to the fore on the palate.
• Finish: The finish is sweet and fades with tobacco and liquorice.

Distillery/Bottler:

High Coast Distillery AB produced Silent Mills 03 – Svanö in Sweden and bottled the whisky itself as a limited edition. The company was founded in 2007 by a group of whisky-loving friends, filled its first cask in 2010 and changed its name from Box Destilleri AB to High Coast Distillery AB in 2018.

The distillery is located in Ådalen on the Ångermanälven river and matures its whisky in unheated warehouses exposed to the wide temperature fluctuations of northern Sweden. For its peated spirit, it makes the distillation cuts later than for its unpeated spirit, allowing more phenols to enter the heart of the run. The resulting spirit is less fruit-driven and tends instead towards notes of tobacco, liquorice and smoke.
