High Coast Silent Mills 04 Box is the fourth and final release in the peated Silent Mills series. The Swedish single malt initially matured in bourbon casks before receiving a finish in first-fill port casks. Its phenol content is 41 ppm. It was bottled at 51% vol. in October 2021, with a release of 6,200 bottles.

The series builds on the peated Timmer style, matured in 200-litre bourbon casks, and expands it through the use of additional cask types. In this edition, dark sweetness, vanilla, citrus and coconut combine with pear, seaweed, spices and powerful smoke.

The name Box recalls the sawmill that produced box blanks for the English market. After the sawmill burned down in 1890, a steam power station was built on the same site in 1912 and retained the Box name. This building has been used for whisky production since 23 December 2010.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose brings together pear, vanilla, seaweed and ginger with campfire smoke, orange peel and aniseed.
• Palate: On the palate, warming peat carries notes of vanilla, a delicate citrus streak and creamy coconut.
• Finish: The long, peaty finish combines liquorice and white pepper with lingering smoky spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

High Coast Distillery AB produces its whisky in Bjärtrå on the Ångermanälven river. The company was founded in 2007 by a group of friends with a passion for whisky. In 2010, the stills arrived, the first cask was filled, and whisky production began in the former Box steam power station on 23 December. High Coast makes Silent Mills 04 Box and bottles the whisky itself.

In 2018, the company changed its name from Box Destilleri AB to High Coast Distillery AB. The distillery works with clear wort and an average fermentation time of 82.5 hours. For peated spirit, it makes the distillation cuts later to include more of the phenols that shape the smoky character.
