Rather than a conventional malt-and-grain blend, The Hanson combines several Irish single grain whiskeys. Its components are between five and eleven years old. They matured in bourbon casks and American craft whiskey casks from Kentucky, Tennessee and New York. The selection includes first-fill and second-fill bourbon casks. Charring the inside of the bourbon casks opens up the wood to help develop flavour. The previous bourbon maturation also leaves flavours that contribute to the subsequent whiskey maturation.

Through repeated blending and tasting, Louise McGuane developed a smooth, fruity whiskey with a distinct oak influence. The grain whiskey has a creamy texture. Citrus and vanilla are joined by nutmeg, clove and honey. The whiskey is bottled at 46%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

The name recalls Gauger Hanson, the son-in-law of the historical J.J. Corry. In the early 20th century, he worked for the tax authorities, inspecting casks at Kilrush harbour.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers pronounced notes of vanilla fudge and toasted coconut. Grilled pineapple adds fruity freshness, while lime provides a citrus edge.
• Palate: The palate opens with lively green apple, while toasted coconut remains present. Fresh oak is clearly apparent, and a grassy ryegrass note develops into lemongrass.
• Finish: The finish feels light and fresh, leaving a subtle, slightly sweet oak note. Salty and mineral impressions add to the lingering flavours.

Distillery/Bottler:

J.J. Corry operates as an independent whiskey bonder: the company sources spirits from Irish distilleries, manages their maturation and creates its own bottlings from them. The whiskeys are stored in the Atlantic Rackhouse on Louise McGuane's family farm in Cooraclare, County Clare. Regular cask checks and tastings help identify suitable components for blends or single cask bottlings. J.J. Corry groups its casks by flavour profile and selects the components of its blends from these groups.

For The Hanson, Louise McGuane sought out American casks and visited Irish distilleries. Sourcing casks, monitoring maturation and making the final blend are the key stages of her work. The whiskey was bottled on the family farm.
