Kyrö Dark Gin

Volume: 0.5 litres | Alcohol content: 42.6% | Chill filtration: Yes | Colouring: No

Special Features:

Kyrö Dark Gin combines Finnish wholegrain rye and 17 spices and botanicals with maturation in new American white oak casks. The gin spends ten months in cask before being balanced with freshly distilled orange peel and black pepper. It was formerly called Koskue. This version contains 0.5 litres at 42.6% alcohol.

Rye spice meets local herbs and the vanilla notes of American white oak. Orange, pepper and cask wood bring warmer nuances to the juniper base, appealing to whisky drinkers too. Delicate hints of a flower meadow also emerge on the palate.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, oak and orange mingle with a hint of a summer flower meadow.
• Palate: Honey and sweet orange combine with pepper, vanilla and oak on the palate. Delicate floral notes complement the flavours.
• Finish: Pepper and honey linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Kyrö Distillery Company makes its spirits in Isokyrö from Finnish wholegrain rye. The idea arose when five friends were drinking rye whisky together in a sauna and wondered why this grain, so widespread in Finland, was not also used to make Finnish whisky. They found a home for their distillery in a disused dairy, where the still was first fired up in 2014.

Gin was added while the first whiskies were still maturing in their casks. Rye remained the basis for these spirits too. Its sticky nature makes processing difficult, so Kyrö has specifically adapted its production equipment and working methods to this grain. In gin, the rye base particularly influences texture and mouthfeel and provides the foundation for the botanicals.
