Special features: The Laizhou STR Red Wine Cask is a Chinese single malt whisky produced at the Laizhou Distillery, which opened in 2021 in Qionglai, a region with a rich tradition of distilling projects. The distillery is one of the most modern in China and has an annual capacity of about 4.8 million liters. The rare STR technique is used in the production of this whisky, where former red wine casks are treated by sanding, toasting, and re-charring. This process promotes the activation of the wood and allows additional layers of aroma to unfold. The 72-hour fermentation of the malted barley supports the unique character of the whisky.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals aromas of ripe apples, accompanied by smoked and pickled plums, as well as creamy hints of vanilla. Stewed apples are also present.
• Palate: On the palate, caramel and buttery toast notes combine with a hint of smoky oak, underpinned by dark chocolate and cinnamon. Creamy butter and vanilla round off the flavor profile.
• Finish: The finish is characterized by roasted nuts, complemented by fine hints of chocolate and a touch of oak. A further impression of melted caramel lingers after the first sip.

Distillery/Bottler: The Laizhou Distillery is located in Qionglai, a traditional distilling region west of Chengdu. It is known for the STR technique used in cask treatment, which achieves a more intense aroma intensity. The distillery, which opened in 2021, brings a fresh breeze to whisky production in China and enables the production of high-quality spirits. With a capacity of around 4.8 million liters per year, it is one of the most modern in the country.
