Special Features:

A two-year finish in a Ximénez-Spínola PX sherry barrique gives this smoky Ledaig from Tobermory Distillery pronounced fruit and sherry notes. Murray McDavid selected the single malt, distilled in 2011, for its Benchmark series. The 13-year-old whisky was bottled from cask #2300948 in 2025 at 55.7%; this exclusive bottling for Kirsch comprises 310 bottles. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

The PX influence adds sweetness and fruit to the peat smoke without displacing the whisky’s salty, maritime character. Apricot, red fruit, mocha and fig sit alongside hickory, cigar leaf and flint. At its high alcoholic strength, a few drops of water in the glass offer another way to explore these impressions.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, smoky apricot and dry hickory wood mingle with salty malt; a sea-salt note accompanies the fruit.
• Palate: On the palate, robust peat smoke meets ripe red fruit and dark mocha. The whisky is full-bodied, sweet and spicy.
• Finish: The long finish brings cigar leaf and ripe fig. Salty coastal notes and a mineral hint of flint linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Tobermory Distillery stands by the harbour on the Isle of Mull and was founded in 1798. It makes two distinct styles of single malt: unpeated Tobermory and smoky Ledaig. The distillery uses water from the Gearr Abhainn to make its whisky. This Ledaig was distilled there in 2011.

Murray McDavid is an independent bottler founded in 1994 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright. Maturing whisky in carefully selected casks, particularly former wine casks, has been part of its approach from the beginning. The company is now based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. For this Benchmark Ledaig, Murray McDavid chose the PX barrique for the two-year finish and then bottled the whisky from it.
