Thiron 2024 opens an annual series commemorating Lindores Abbey’s connection to the French abbey of Thiron-Gardais. For this edition, whisky matured in red wine barriques, bourbon casks and new French oak casks made from wood sourced near Thiron-Gardais. The distillery arranged for new trees to be planted there to replace the oaks used.

Released in 2024 at 49.4% alcohol, this whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. Vanilla, caramel syrup and baking spices give way to ginger and roasted chestnuts, accompanied by a silky texture. A light smoky note complements its fruity, spicy character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers clementines and lemon zest alongside meadow honey and a hint of green grass.
• Palate: Apple pastry and vanilla ice cream appear first on the palate, followed by a light chilli note. Blackcurrants and a little hay join them.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming, with a slight bitterness emerging after a while.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lindores Abbey Distillery stands in Newburgh, in Scotland’s Fife region, beside the abbey’s remains. Its history also leads to Thiron-Gardais: the abbey there was the mother house of the order to which Lindores belonged. In 1494, the Lindores monk John Cor was commissioned to make aqua vitae for the king. Drew McKenzie Smith revived this connection for the Thiron series.

The distillery uses wooden washbacks and ferments its wort for 96 to 114 hours. It runs its two spirit stills slowly to increase the spirit’s contact with copper and produce a lighter distillery character.
