This Longmorn from the Private Collection spent its entire maturation in a first-fill sherry butt. Distilled in 1966, the whisky was bottled in 2019 after 53 years in cask 610. The single cask yielded 398 bottles at 46% alcohol. Its deep mahogany colour and combination of ripe fruit, spice and oak show how strongly the long sherry-cask maturation shaped its character.

Gordon & MacPhail included this bottling in its Private Collection and released it as part of its summer 2019 collection. The single malt has no added colouring and is not chill-filtered. It comes in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, sweet fruitcake, brown sugar and sticky prunes mingle with candied citrus peel. Cinnamon and clove add warmth, while vanilla, forest berries and a delicate note of smoky oak round out the aroma.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet preserved dark fruit meets peppery spice. Blackberries and ripe cherries are accompanied by liquorice, dried tobacco and oak.
• Finish: Spiced fruit lingers through the long finish, leaving charred oak and a delicate ashy note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Longmorn stands in Speyside near Elgin. John Duff built the distillery in the late 19th century; its fruity, full-bodied whisky has also long been prized for blends.

Independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail oversaw the cask maturation and bottling of this Longmorn. Based in Elgin, the company has worked with Scottish distilleries since 1895 and selects wood to suit each distillate. Its sherry casks are made and seasoned to its specifications in Jerez before travelling to Scotland. For this bottling, it chose a first-fill sherry butt.
