Mackmyra Svensk Ek expresses the distillery’s Swedish sense of origin through a precise cask recipe. Of the composition, 68% comes from 200-litre ex-bourbon casks, 12% from new 128-litre Oloroso casks, 10% from new 100-litre Swedish oak casks and a further 10% from new 128-litre American oak casks. This Swedish single malt is bottled at 46.1%, without added colouring or chill filtration.

The combination of ex-bourbon, Oloroso, Swedish oak and American oak casks shapes this house composition. Its overall character brings together fruity and sweet impressions with ginger, pepper and pronounced oak spice.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pear, apricot and fresh citrus fruit combine with vanilla fudge and honey. Ginger and pepper add spice to the fruity and sweet notes.
• Palate: The palate reveals pear, citrus and dried ginger. Caramel, sweet almond and slightly bready notes meet spicy oak.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming. Sweet milk chocolate provides a counterpoint to assertive oak and the spice of pepper and ginger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Svensk Ek is a single malt from Mackmyra Svensk Whisky AB and is one of the distillery’s official bottlings. The idea for a Swedish malt distillery emerged in 1998 among eight friends who had studied engineering together and met annually in Sälen. Mackmyra was founded in 1999. Locally grown barley, spring water and Swedish oak were part of its approach to provenance from the outset. The Swedish oak component in Svensk Ek carries this idea through to the cask selection.

Mackmyra now belongs to No.1 Beverage Group and produces whisky at the Gravity Distillery. There, the distillery uses gravity to make production processes more efficient and reduce its CO₂ footprint. Its maturation sites include the former Bodås mine, where whisky matures around 50 metres underground, not far from the distillery.
