This 50-year-old whisky is the oldest expression in the current MacPhail's Collection. The Speyside single malt matured in sherry casks made to Gordon & MacPhail's specifications. Its distillery of origin is undisclosed. Gordon & MacPhail bottled the whisky at 46% in 0.7-litre bottles.

Its long maturation in sherry casks brings dark fruit, milk chocolate and spices, with hints of leather and tobacco. Orange and apple add freshness, while oak is particularly noticeable in the finish. A light touch of smoke is also part of the collection's character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, stewed dark fruit, cinnamon, milk chocolate and Demerara sugar mingle with a hint of cigar box, beeswax and old leather.
• Palate: On the palate, orange and black pepper meet sweet dried tobacco, joined by apple, milk chocolate and further spices.
• Finish: The finish is long, full and balanced, fading with spices and oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail founded Gordon & MacPhail in Elgin in 1895 as a grocery and spirits merchant. The company began selecting whisky from Speyside distilleries early on and, under John Urquhart, developed its approach to cask maturation. The distillery behind each whisky in the MacPhail's Collection remains undisclosed; Gordon & MacPhail oversees maturation and bottling.

Gordon & MacPhail has its sherry casks made in Jerez to its own specifications and seasoned before they are shipped to Scotland. Choosing the cask and deciding when to bottle are central to its work. This 50-year-old MacPhail's whisky illustrates how long a single malt can mature under Gordon & MacPhail's care.
