For Mars Maltage Cosmo, Hombo Shuzo blends several malt whiskies from Japan and the United Kingdom; the blend contains no grain whisky. This blended malt has been part of the Mars range since 2015 and comes at 43% ABV in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Cosmo takes its name from Mount Kosumo in Japan’s Central Alps. Its label evokes the starry night sky above the distillery. Honey and caramel form a sweet core, complemented by ripe fruit and a subtle smoky note. The smooth, rounded texture leads into a gentle finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, honey and caramel mingle with ripe fruit and a subtle smoky note. Vanilla and red fruit recall cherries and raspberries.
• Palate: The whisky feels rounded and smooth on the palate. Fruit and honey accompany orange oil, chocolate, fresh barley and toasted oak; a very subtle smoky note remains perceptible.
• Finish: The gentle finish lingers, bringing together fresh plum, light-coloured grapes and grain with a hint of chocolate pastries.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hombo Shuzo began producing whisky in 1949 under the guidance of distillation expert Kiichiro Iwai. For Mars Whisky, the company now operates the Mars Komagatake Distillery in Miyada, Nagano Prefecture. Established in 1985 as Mars Shinshu, the distillery stands 798 metres above sea level at the foot of Mount Komagatake. After a production pause that began in 1992, it resumed malt distillation in 2011; it has been called the Mars Komagatake Distillery since 2024.

Cosmo shows a different side of Hombo Shuzo’s work from the distillery’s single malts: for this blended malt, the company combines Japanese and British malt whiskies.
