The eaux-de-vie selected for Martell VS Single Distillery all come from one distillery in France’s Cognac region. The name therefore refers to the shared distillation source of the blended wine spirits, rather than to a single-cask bottling. The result is a fruit-forward, particularly smooth cognac in the VS age classification.

For its double distillation, Martell uses only clear wines whose sediment has been removed beforehand. This choice is intended to preserve the grapes’ fruit aromas. Plum, apricot and candied lemon take centre stage in VS Single Distillery. Its fruity, smooth character also lends itself to long drinks and cocktails. The cognac is offered at 40% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals pronounced aromas of plum, apricot and candied lemon. Caramel, crème brûlée and vanilla are joined by dried apricots, plum compote and roasted Brazil nuts. Violet and jasmine add floral accents, while nutmeg and cinnamon bring spice to the fruit.
• Palate: The cognac is exceptionally smooth and fruity on the palate. A slightly sweet opening of caramel and vanilla fudge quickly gives way to a drier impression with lively lemon and oak reminiscent of cinnamon and nutmeg. Chocolate cake, nutty fruitcake and dried apricots round out the flavour.
• Finish: Sponge cake, green grapes, Brazil nuts and dried fruit linger alongside caramel and lively lemon. Nutmeg and cinnamon accompany the distinctly dry finish, contrasting with the sweet opening on the palate.

Jean Martell founded the cognac house in 1715. Based in Cognac, France, Martell combines the distillation of clear wines with maturation in fine-grained oak casks. Removing sediment before distillation is an essential part of this approach: it is intended to retain the original wine’s fruity character in the spirit. Subsequent cask maturation adds the influence of oak to this style.
