Miyakojima Rum - The Makugan - Taragawa Distillery
Special features: The Miyakojima Rum "The Makugan" is produced by the Taragawa Distillery in Okinawa, Japan. This distillery was founded in 1948 and is known for traditional Awamori, a rice spirit. Since 2018, it has also been producing rum, using local ingredients such as sugarcane molasses. The name "The Makugan" refers to the coconut crab, a typical animal of the region. The rum ages for five months in bourbon barrels, which supports the complex flavor profile and emphasizes local tradition.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, fruity notes are present, with aromas of banana and passion fruit.
- Palate: On the palate, it is complex and enjoyable, with flavor notes of vanilla and sweet spices.
- Finish: The finish is persistent, with aromas of white pepper and tropical fruits.
Distillery/Bottler: The Taragawa Distillery is located on the island of Miyakojima. It produces rum from sugarcane molasses, local yeast, and mineral-rich water. The rum is double distilled in a hybrid pot still. The use of local water and ingredients reflects the connection to the region.
