A finish in former Tawny Port casks adds another dimension to the bourbon cask maturation of Navy Island XO Reserve in this limited edition. The Jamaican rums first mature in bourbon casks under tropical conditions. The blend then spends at least six months in casks that previously held Tawny Port. This finishing period adds further dried fruit, sweetness and spice notes to its full-bodied character.

The blend brings together rums from Worthy Park, Monymusk and Hampden Estate and includes matured spirits distilled in traditional Jamaican pot stills. The 2023 release is bottled at 46.4% in 0.7-litre bottles. It contains no added sugar or colouring and comes in a cylindrical gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, abundant dried fruit meets sweet caramel. A hint of vanilla and subtle spice notes accompany the distinctive aroma of Tawny Port.
• Palate: On the palate, dark chocolate, figs and spices combine with natural sweetness. The mouthfeel is smooth, and the flavour is rich and layered.
• Finish: The long, warming finish leaves lingering notes of port, toasted oak and spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Navy Island is the brand of the Amsterdam-based Navy Island Rum Company. Founder Jacco Kroon worked for Demerara Distillers from 2004 to 2016, handling El Dorado in its European export business. A visit to Guyana in 2008 deepened his interest in rum. His own brand focuses on Jamaican blends; XO Reserve has been part of the range since its launch in 2016.

Worthy Park, Monymusk and Hampden Estate supply the rums for this blend. Their use of traditional pot stills forms an important part of its Jamaican heritage. The brand takes its name from the small island of Navy Island off Port Antonio. The British Royal Navy used the island in the 18th century; this maritime history inspired the brand and its design.
