Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 43%
Special Features:
The first Essentials edition explores the traditional direct coal firing of Yoichi's pot stills. Nikka brings together single malts from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, highlighting the roasted notes and depth of flavour of Yoichi's malts. The blended malt also includes long-matured whiskies from both distilleries dating from 2000, the year the Taketsuru Pure Malt brand was launched. These stocks come from a period when difficult market conditions had led Nikka to cut production substantially.
Essentials launches a series planned to comprise five annual releases through to 2030, when Taketsuru Pure Malt celebrates its 30th anniversary. Each release explores a different defining element of the brand. The 2026 edition comprises 20,000 bottles worldwide, with 10,000 each for Japan and the remaining markets. The label reflects its theme with a colour gradient from black to Yoichi's deep indigo blue. The whisky was bottled in 2026 at 43% in 0.7-litre bottles and comes in gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, malt and subtle roasted aromas mingle with delicate pastry notes. Apricot jam adds a sweet-and-tart accent, complemented by mellow, mature oak notes.
- Palate: The whisky is full-bodied and rich on the palate. Natural malty sweetness combines with the depth of peat to create layers of flavour.
- Finish: Malty sweetness persists through the lingering finish. Gentle peat and a subtly bitter oak note accompany it as the flavours gradually fade.
Distillery/Bottler:
Masataka Taketsuru founded Nikka in 1934 and later lent his name to Taketsuru Pure Malt. He learned whisky making in Scotland and brought that knowledge back to Japan. Yoichi on Hokkaido was Nikka's first distillery; Miyagikyo, near Sendai, followed in 1969. It lies in a wooded valley between two clear streams.
The different distillery setups deliberately provide the blenders with contrasting malt styles. Yoichi's pot stills are heated directly with coal, while Miyagikyo heats its pot stills indirectly with steam. Yoichi's robust malts contrast with Miyagikyo's more delicate, fruit-led malts. Taketsuru Pure Malt brings these contrasting styles together without using grain whisky.
