Ondjaba The Namibian Whiskey - Gravino Cask Finish

Special features: This whisky is an authentic Namibian creation, produced by the Erongo Mountain Winery at an altitude of over 1,200 meters. What makes it special is that the grain is smoked over elephant dung, giving the whisky a distinctive, sweet, and slightly cigar-like aroma. The subsequent maturation in Gravino casks—barrels previously used to hold the house's port-like fortified wine—gives the whisky a complex fruity note and harmonious spice.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Smoky notes with sweet, cigar-like spice and hints of ripe fruit
  • Palate: Full-bodied, with a fine balance of spicy smokiness and sweet-fruity tones
  • Finish: Long-lasting, warm and with a subtle fruit sweetness and spicy nuances

Distillery/Bottler: The Erongo Mountain Winery, run by Wolfgang and Esther Koll, is Namibia's first whisky distillery. The German couple combines local ingredients and traditional production methods to create a whisky that possesses a distinct, African identity, far removed from Scottish and Irish influences. The use of mahangu, a type of millet cultivated in Namibia for thousands of years, and the innovative smoking process over elephant dung make Ondjaba a unique product.
