Part of The Recollection Series #2, this 30-year-old Speyside single malt combines a rare single-cask bottling with the later history of the closed Pittyvaich distillery. The spirit was distilled on 19 May 1992 and matured in Refill Bourbon Barrel 4025. Gordon & MacPhail bottled the whisky on 13 February 2023 at its natural cask strength of 48.9%; the cask yielded just 88 bottles.

The bottling also belongs to the Connoisseurs Choice range. It is non-chill-filtered, contains no added colouring and is presented in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose brings together fragrant pear, dried ginger and fruit blossom, followed by Seville orange, apple and white chocolate.
• Palate: On the palate, grapefruit and lime zest are followed by chilli heat, before honeydew melon and apricot lead to a hint of marzipan.
• Finish: The full, lingering finish fades with cocoa powder.

Distillery/Bottler:

Pittyvaich was built beside Dufftown Distillery in 1975 and operated with two wash stills and two spirit stills. Its fruity, characterful new make was particularly sought after by blenders. The distillery ceased production in 1993 and was later demolished, so this whisky, distilled in 1992, dates from its final years of production.

Gordon & MacPhail was founded in Elgin in 1895 and evolved from a grocery and spirits merchant into a specialist in matching new make spirit with oak casks. George Urquhart launched Connoisseurs Choice in 1968 to bottle single malts from different Scottish distilleries in their own right. This Pittyvaich matured in a single cask and was released by Gordon & MacPhail as an independent bottling within the range.
