Special Features:

Planteray Grande Réserve brings together two ageing locations and two distillation methods. For this blend, molasses is fermented for three to four days, then distilled in a twin-column system and a pot still. The rums first age for one to three years in bourbon casks on Barbados. They then spend one further year in Ferrand casks in southwestern France; this second maturation takes place in former cognac casks.

Candied tropical fruit, coconut, almonds and vanilla shape the character of this bottling. Production includes a dosage of 16 grams of cane sugar per litre. The rum is bottled at 40% alcohol and is suitable both for drinking neat and for cocktails such as Rum Punch.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, ripe tropical fruit combines with vanilla. Delicate hints of white peach and coconut develop from these aromas.
• Palate: The palate opens with candied tropical fruit, followed by rich bourbon vanilla. Fresh fruit notes and delicate tannins balance the richness.
• Finish: The long finish is silky and balanced.

Distillery/Bottler:

Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery stands on Brighton Beach in Barbados and was founded in 1893. Historical records in the Distiller’s Vault and a collection of old stills preserve the knowledge of earlier generations. This history also plays a part in the production of Grande Réserve: a proportion of the blend comes from Old Gregg’s, a copper pot still handcrafted in 1850 that remains in use.

Planteray combines rum production on Barbados with a second cask maturation in France. For Grande Réserve, this takes place at Château de Bonbonnet in the Charente. There, the rum continues to mature in French oak casks after its tropical ageing.
