Poltergeist Unfiltered retains the natural aromatic oils of its twelve botanicals because it is not filtered after distillation. Diluting it with water or chilling it can therefore cause a milky cloudiness. Known as the louche effect, this is part of the unfiltered gin’s character.

The recipe combines juniper, angelica, cardamom, cassia bark, Chinese liquorice root, coriander seeds, lemon peel, orris root and star anise with Tasmanian lemon myrtle, macadamia nuts and mountain pepperberries. The botanicals are macerated in copper stills for more than 20 hours, followed by twelve to fourteen hours of distillation. Tasmanian water is then used to bring the spirit to 46% alcohol. The bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Alongside its spicy and citrus character, the gin also reveals nutty notes. It can be enjoyed neat or over ice and works equally well in a Martini or Negroni. Its awards include Platinum at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020 and a Master rating at the Global Gin Masters 2025.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Tasmanian pepperberries and warm cinnamon notes are bold and aromatic on the nose. Delicate anise sweetness, lemon myrtle and lemon peel complement the fresh bouquet.
• Palate: The gin is full-bodied and intensely spicy on the palate. Lively citrus notes contrast with the soft, creamy texture of macadamia nuts. Juniper provides the backbone.
• Finish: The bold finish is long-lasting. Spicy and citrus impressions linger alongside an earthy depth.

Distillery/Bottler:

Callington Mill Distillery is located in Oatlands, Tasmania. Poltergeist originated at Shene Distillery, where Damian Mackey developed the recipe. When Shene was sold to Lark Distillery, Callington Mill acquired the rights to the gin brand and its stocks. John Ibrahim, the owner of Callington Mill and previously a shareholder in Shene, was involved in this transition. Callington Mill continues to use the original recipe and produces Poltergeist in small batches.
