Special Features:

Port Askaig Sherry Cask was matured exclusively in Oloroso sherry butts. The small batch was created from 20 casks made by the Spanish cooperage Jose y Miguel Martin. Elixir Distillers bottles this Islay single malt at 50.5% without chill filtration or added colouring.

Sultanas, dark chocolate and orange form the whisky’s sweet, fruity side. Spices, dense coal smoke and maritime salinity carry its full-bodied character into the long, warming finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, smoked plum jam and sultanas combine with navel orange and liquorice. Notes of pepper-seared meat and porcini mushrooms meet caramel, brown sugar, blackcurrants and ashy, earthy smoke.
• Palate: On the palate, coal smoke and ashy peat gather around dark-chocolate cherries, dark fruit preserve and charred barbecue notes. Roasted hazelnuts and an iodine-like, medicinal nuance complement the full-bodied impression.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming. Ashy peat smoke accompanies the fading dried fruit before cocoa nibs, dried mint and pepper emerge, leaving behind a trace of liqueur-like berries.

Distillery/Bottler:

Elixir Distillers launched Port Askaig in 2009 as an independently bottled Islay single malt brand. Its name refers to the port village of the same name, which has served for generations as a gateway to the island and its whisky trade. For Port Askaig, young Islay single malt is transferred into selected cask types for further maturation. Whisky Maker Oliver Chilton selects and combines the casks with the aim of balancing peat smoke, fruit and the influence of each cask type.
