Powers Irish Rye is an Irish rye whiskey made from 100% Irish rye. All the grain comes from Cooney Furlong Farm in County Wexford. To revive a grain choice historically explored by Powers, brewhouse throughput was reduced and fermentation times were extended. The whiskey matures in a combination of virgin American oak, first-fill and refill casks. It is bottled at 43.2% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres and is not chill-filtered.

The earthy, peppery rye character combines with sweetness from maturation in American oak. Virgin oak, first-fill and refill casks all contribute to the cask profile.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, burnt orange, maraschino cherry and toffee banana meet freshly baked rye bread and buttery biscuits. Clove, white pepper and ginger complement vanilla and charred oak.
• Palate: On the palate, candied ginger and orange peel combine with clove and peppermint. Caramelised apple, brown sugar, sweet grain and red liquorice unfold, while vanilla and charred oak balance the rye spice.
• Finish: The finish is long. A tingling chilli oil note lingers alongside honey-glazed fruit and pronounced grain notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

Powers Irish Rye is produced at Midleton Distillery in County Cork. The brand belongs to Irish Distillers and traces its origins to John's Lane Distillery in Dublin, founded in 1791. Powers helped establish Irish Distillers in 1966, and production has taken place at Midleton since 1975.

The inspiration for today's rye whiskey came from historical mash recipes examined by Carol Quinn, archivist at Irish Distillers. They show that Powers was already experimenting with rye in the 19th century. The history of John's Lane also includes growing plants on the distillery roof in the 1940s, bottling its own whiskey and introducing the Irish whiskey miniature known as baby Power. Today's Irish Rye continues this willingness to explore raw materials and production methods.
