Special Features:

The distinctive flavour of Alte Haselnuss begins before distillation: Prinz roasts the hazelnuts in-house, then soaks them in alcohol. This maceration extracts aromatic compounds from the nuts. The spirit is then distilled twice.

The hazelnut distillate first matures for several years in stoneware, followed by several months in a wooden cask. Maturation gives it smoothness, a golden-yellow colour and a delicate woody note. Alte Haselnuss has an alcohol content of 41% and comes in a bottle containing 0.7 litres.

Enjoy it as a digestif at 17 to 21 °C in a stemmed schnapps glass. It also pairs well with nut and chocolate desserts or ice cream.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: An intense aroma of roasted hazelnuts leads the nose.
• Palate: The spirit is smooth and full-bodied on the palate. Delicately bitter nuances recall chocolate and caramel.
• Finish: The long finish remains mild, with a subtle bitter note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Fein-Brennerei Prinz is located in Hörbranz on the Austrian shore of Lake Constance. Its history began in 1886, when Thomas Prinz founded a cider-making and cooperage business and produced spirits from his own fruit. The distilling business was registered in 1921 and has operated as a bonded distillery ever since. Today, Thomas IV. and Maximilian Prinz run the family company in its fourth generation.

The fruit distillery introduced cooled fermentation tanks and vacuum distillation in 2004. The tanks keep the fruit mash at 16 to 18 °C, while the vacuum lowers the boiling point during distillation, helping to preserve delicate fruit aromas. These methods are part of the company's fruit processing; the production of Alte Haselnuss, by contrast, begins with roasting and macerating the nuts.
