Alte Haselnuss owes its pronounced nutty character to hazelnuts roasted at the distillery. The nuts are dried for several weeks before processing. After roasting, they are steeped in alcohol; this maceration extracts their aromatic compounds. The resulting preparation is then distilled twice.

The hazelnut distillate matures for several years in stoneware before spending several months in wooden casks. Maturation gives it smoothness, a golden-yellow colour and a delicate woody note. The spirit is bottled at 41% alcohol; this bottle contains 1 litre.

Alte Haselnuss can be served as a digestif at 17 to 21 °C. Its roasted nut character pairs well with nut and chocolate desserts, ice cream or a cup of coffee.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Roasted hazelnuts give the nose a pronounced nutty aroma.
• Palate: The spirit feels soft and full-bodied on the palate. Delicately bitter notes recall chocolate and caramel.
• Finish: The long finish remains mild and balanced, with a subtle bitter note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Fein-Brennerei Prinz is based in Hörbranz on the Austrian shore of Lake Constance. Its history began in 1886, when Thomas Prinz founded a cider-making business and a cooperage. In 1921, he registered the distilling business. Today, Thomas IV. and Maximilian Prinz run the family business in its fourth generation.

Double distillation is part of the distillery's approach to making its spirits. Prinz has also developed its fruit-processing techniques: temperature-controlled fermentation tanks and vacuum distillation have been used since 2004. Distilling under vacuum lowers the boiling point, helping to preserve delicate fruit aromas. These methods belong to the distillery's general fruit-spirit production; for Alte Haselnuss, the focus is instead on roasting and macerating the nuts.
