Special Features:

Former Caroni casks shape the first aged rum from Distillerie de Port-au-Prince. For Providence 2019, the contents of 25 casks were brought together after three years of maturation. This bottling thus combines Haitian sugarcane spirit with casks previously used for rum from Trinidad.

The raw material is sugarcane syrup made from the traditional Cristalline variety. Distillation took place on 29 September 2019 in an artisanal Muller still heated in a water bath. Following maturation, the rum was bottled in 2022 at 52%. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, oak and vanilla meet sweetish herbal notes. Ripe, fruity sugarcane gradually emerges. With air, it recalls gently reduced sugarcane juice; its combination with wood and vanilla takes on a lacquer-like note.
• Palate: On the palate, pronounced fruit and a slightly milky impression sit alongside spicy wood, pepper and vanilla syrup. The texture becomes increasingly creamy and oily, while vanilla and sweet spices underpin the flavour.
• Finish: A concentrated sugarcane impression persists through the long finish, accompanied by candied citrus peel and a hint of olive.

Distillery/Bottler:

Distillerie de Port-au-Prince was founded in Haiti’s capital in 2018. Providence is a collaboration between the Linge family, which has ties to the Haitian Barbancourt rum family, and La Maison & Velier. The distillery draws on artisanal rum-making practices using batch distillation.

The Cristalline sugarcane comes from Michel Sajous’ fields near Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye, around 150 kilometres north of the capital. A copper still made by the German manufacturer Muller and heated in a water bath forms part of the distillery’s technical core. The origin of the raw material and this method of distillation link the rum’s agricultural foundations with the working practices in Port-au-Prince.
