Rhum J.M VSOP is a Rhum Agricole AOC Martinique made from fresh sugarcane juice and aged for at least four years. For the first three years, it matures in a combination of new American oak casks and re-charred ex-bourbon casks. It then spends at least one year in French oak casks of varying sizes and toast levels. Spring water from Montagne Pelée is used to reduce the rhum to its bottling strength of 43%. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Exotic fruit, vanilla and wood define the character of this bottling. Spice and a subtle smoky note complement the fruit, while roasted and caramelised flavours give the rhum a warm, robust expression.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, exotic fruit and quince jam mingle with vanilla and wood. Light toasted notes complement the bouquet. Brioche, cloves and dried lemon add further accents, while grassy notes recede into the background.
• Palate: On the palate, the rhum is balanced, with layered fruit flavours. Exotic fruit meets vanilla, cinnamon and gingerbread with floral honey. Crème caramel, chestnuts and banana fried in brown butter complement the flavours.
• Finish: The finish is harmonious and lightly smoky, with a dry aftertaste of hay and Lady Grey tea.

Distillery/Bottler:

Rhum J.M is produced on the Fonds-Préville estate in Macouba, at the foot of Montagne Pelée. Jean-Marie Martin converted a sugar factory there into a distillery in 1845. The Crassous de Médeuil family took over in 1912, followed in 2002 by GBH, a family-owned group based in Martinique. The brand takes its name from the distillery founder’s initials.

The distillery grows sugarcane and raises its young plants in its own nursery. More than three quarters of the sugarcane it processes comes from the immediate surrounding area and is pressed directly after delivery. J.M distils the fermented sugarcane juice in two copper Creole columns. Cask treatment is also carried out on site: the distillery chars some of its casks itself, controlling an important influence on the maturation of its aged rhums. The VSOP matures in the distillery’s own warehouses and is bottled at Fonds-Préville.
