Special Features:
Ron Millonario Número 15 Reserva Especial combines maturation at sea level with solera ageing in former bourbon and sherry casks. The blend includes rums aged for up to 15 years. However, Número 15 does not indicate the minimum age of the entire bottling: the name refers to the brand's 15 selection criteria, covering everything from sugar cane and maturation to blending the rums.
Slow fermentation and careful distillation are part of this rum's production. Its character is distinctly sweet and concentrated, with dried fruit, molasses and honeyed notes. Fresh hints of mint and spicy accents provide a counterpoint to this generous sweetness.
The bottle's embossed label echoes its former straw wrapping. The sun motif and its circular geometric elements reference Inca culture, while the cornucopia symbolises abundance. This version contains 0.7 litres at 40% alcohol and comes without gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose reveals intense notes of sultanas, dried figs, plums and dates. Dark sugar cane molasses and chestnut honey give the aromas depth, with bergamot adding a subtle nuance. The bouquet is warm, rich and velvety, while the alcohol remains in the background.
- Palate: The palate opens with a very sweet, full-bodied impression of vanilla, toffee, candied oranges and dates. Honeyed sweetness, sugar cane molasses and milk chocolate meet a delicate balsamic freshness reminiscent of mint. Hints of kola nut, cloves and herbal liqueur follow. The flavour intensity continues to build.
- Finish: The finish feels warm, velvety and soft. The honeyed sweetness remains present before red chilli and aromatic herbs bring a spicy closing accent.
Distillery/Bottler:
The history of Ron Millonario begins in Chiclayo in northern Peru. In 1904, local farmers founded the Hacienda Agrícola de Chiclayo and built a small refinery to market their sugar. In 1922, the Piera de Castillo family, led by Don Rolando, took over the hacienda, together with its refinery and sugar cane plantation.
To expand production, Don Rolando turned to European technical expertise. His son Augusto began studying chemical engineering in Cambridge in 1933. In 1938, roller mills for sugar processing and a Scottish distillation column were shipped to Peru. Ron Millonario was officially established in 1950. Its name derives from the expression «por los millonarios»: initially, only a few people could afford the rum.
Fabio Rossi discovered Ron Millonario during a trip to Peru in 2004. The Rossi brothers subsequently helped revive the brand. Ron Millonario thus combines its Peruvian roots with its more recent development under the Rossi brothers.
