Saburomaru V The Hierophant was distilled from heavily peated malt in 2021 and bottled at 48% in 2024. The regular release comprises 12,600 bottles. A cask-strength version at 60%, limited to 2,100 bottles, was released alongside it.

The name The Hierophant refers to tarot card number V. For the 2021 vintage, the distillery combined matured ale yeast with fresh whisky yeast to create ripe, dense aromas. Elegant smoke is joined by maritime seaweed notes, malty sweetness, pear, menthol and lemon peel.

This 0.7-litre bottling is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals nori, coastal notes and straw, accompanied by gentle oak, elegant smoke, pear, menthol and a trace of ham and cheese.
• Palate: The whisky feels soft on the palate, combining nori and salty wakame with malty sweetness, rice porridge, lemon peel, tea candy, ham, pear and menthol.
• Finish: The finish brings gentle peat and malty sweetness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Saburomaru Distillery is located in the Saburomaru district of Tonami, in Toyama Prefecture. Its parent company, Wakatsuru Shuzo, began producing sake there in 1862 and has also made whisky since 1952. Following an extensive renovation, the facility reopened as Saburomaru Distillery in 2017. The distillery focuses on smoky whisky and worked with local partners to develop ZEMON, the world's first cast pot still, in 2019. Saburomaru V The Hierophant was produced by the distillery and released as a distillery bottling.
