Special Features:
Saburomaru VI The Lovers is the seventh release in the single malt series launched in 2020 with Saburomaru 0 The Fool and was issued in limited quantities. The edition combines a Highland-peated distillate from 2020 with an Islay-peated component distilled in 2021. The regular version was bottled in 2025 at 48% in 0.7-litre bottles. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.
Its sensory profile ranges from turmeric and curry spice to elegant smoke, vanilla, waffle and confectionery sweetness, followed by ripe pineapple, honey, charcoal and dried meat. The result is a complex combination of smoky-sweet and savoury impressions.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose opens with turmeric and elegant smoke, followed by rich vanilla, a hint of curry spice, dried meat and a touch of waffle. Confectionery sweetness and ripe pineapple emerge behind them, accompanied by a delicate charcoal note.
- Palate: Elegant smoke and a little honey combine on the palate with waffle and dried meat, while ripe pineapple resonates in the background.
- Finish: The finish gently retains a savoury umami note reminiscent of dried meat.
Distillery/Bottler:
Saburomaru Distillery is Wakatsuru Shuzo's whisky distillery in Toyama Prefecture. Wakatsuru Shuzo was founded in 1862 and began making whisky in 1952. Following an extensive renovation, the distillery made a fresh start in 2017.
Its proprietary technical developments include ZEMON, a cast pot still made from a copper-tin alloy and developed together with the bell foundry Oigo Seisakusho. Its construction draws on the traditional bell-casting techniques of Takaoka. For The Lovers, the distillery also used ale and whisky yeast as well as a mash tun made by Miyake Seisakusho.
The combination of the two peat origins reflects the distillery's development: in 2020, Saburomaru began using Islay peat alongside the Scottish mainland peat it had previously employed.
