Art of Rum by VAST brings together Savanna’s selection of aged rums and the work of graffiti artist VAST. He created the colourful design for the series’ first edition, released in 2023. His artwork appears on both the bottle and the gift packaging.

Molasses rums from four casks were selected for the blend. The spirits from two casks were distilled in the C20 column, while those from the other two came from the copper Savalle column. Distilled in 2015, they matured for eight years in tropical conditions on Réunion. The rum was bottled in 2023 at 52% in 0.7-litre bottles; the edition comprises 2,400 bottles.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is initially restrained, recalling rock candy and fresh fruit. Light hints of molasses and smoke then emerge. With air, pepper and a gentle ashy note become apparent.
• Palate: The opening is balanced, with well-integrated strength and a rounded texture. Smoke and a light tar note then unfold. Dark, almost charred vanilla meets toasted oak.
• Finish: The finish is gently spicy and almost creamy, with a delicate smoky note lingering.

Distillery/Bottler:

Savanna was founded on Réunion in 1870 and was initially based in Saint-Paul. In 1992, the distillery moved to the Bois-Rouge sugar factory. There, it uses both pot stills and distillation columns, producing traditional molasses rum as well as rhum agricole from sugar-cane juice. Combining different distillation methods is therefore part of the distillery’s approach; this edition draws on two of its columns.

The Art of Rum series brings Master Blender Thierry Grondin and his team together with contemporary artists. While the distillery selects and blends the rums, each release receives its own artistic design. The collaboration with VAST was followed by editions featuring Yann Le Gall, Repy and Xandro.
