Blood oranges from Tauranga shape this fruit-forward interpretation of Scapegrace. Fresh raspberries from Tasman and makrut lime leaves from Gisborne are also used in distillation. The recipe combines fresh and dried botanicals with a neutral wheat-based spirit and water from New Zealand's Southern Alps.

Also known as Blood Moon, this bottling combines juicy citrus fruit with juniper and a dry, spicy finish. The gin is offered at 41.6% in a black bottle containing 0.7 litres. The round orange-and-copper-coloured label and blood orange designation add a distinctive splash of colour.

For a gin and tonic, the citrus fruit can be paired with a tropical garnish: Scapegrace recommends premium tonic water and a piece of pineapple for its Blood Moon Rising.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is fresh and tropical. Orange pith, citrus leaves and berries define the bouquet.
• Palate: The gin has a pronounced texture and juicy fruit on the palate. Blood orange flesh takes the lead before resinous juniper and fresh mint emerge.
• Finish: The finish is dry, fresh and peppery. Citrus oils and tropical fruit notes linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Scapegrace Distilling Co distils this gin in New Zealand, where it is also bottled. After leaving its Grey Lynn site in Auckland in 2020, the company developed its new home in Central Otago. Cask storage, a warehouse and the headquarters were built first on an elevated plateau beside Lake Dunstan overlooking Mt Pisa; the new distillery began operating in June 2024.

The gin range explores different approaches to botanicals: Classic uses twelve ingredients, Gold adds dried mandarin, and Black gets its natural dark colour from five plant extracts. Blood Moon, by contrast, uses blood oranges, raspberries and makrut lime leaves from three New Zealand growing regions.
