Special Features:

This limited Scarabus release is a heavily peated Islay single malt finished in Bordeaux Grand Cru wine casks. The whisky is bottled at 57% ABV in 0.7-litre bottles, retains its natural colour and is not chill-filtered.

The wine-cask finish brings dark berries, stewed plums and red-wine spice to the smoky, maritime character. Maraschino cherries, toasted nuts, salted caramel, molasses and oak complete the profile, while ginger and cinnamon shape the spicy finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals dark berries and stewed plums alongside toasted nuts and earthy peat smoke.
• Palate: Maraschino cherries and toasted hazelnuts combine on the palate with juicy red-wine fruit, salted caramel, molasses and spicy oak. Smoky peat and a pleasant warmth enhance the powerful impression.
• Finish: The finish is long and balanced. Fruity sweetness and fine tannins remain enveloped in peat smoke and wood spice, while ginger and cinnamon linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd. is the independent bottler behind Scarabus, while the distillery that produced the Islay single malt remains undisclosed. The brand was unveiled at Fèis Ìle in 2019. Its name refers to a mystical place on Islay and can be translated from Old Norse as “rocky place”. The enigmatic symbols on the label were inspired by Islay-born John Francis Campbell and his sunshine recorder.

The Glasgow-based bottler sources casks from cooperages in Scotland and the United States as well as from Spanish bodegas. It has its own casks filled with new-make spirit and regularly monitors their maturation. Selected whiskies are bottled at its own Premier Bond facility and labelled by hand.
