For the Batch Strength Edition, Hunter Laing selects a small group of Scarabus casks. This limited special release from Batch 1 was finished in Bordeaux Grand Cru wine casks. The whisky is bottled at 57% in 0.7-litre bottles, with no added colour and without chill filtration.

Its aromatic profile brings together blackcurrant, Maraschino cherry and roasted hazelnut with dense peat smoke, dark sugar syrup and charred wood. Ginger and cinnamon shape the long-lasting, gently spicy finish, creating a powerful progression of fruit and smoke.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals dark berries, blackcurrant and red grapes alongside vanilla, toffee and spicy oak.
• Palate: On the palate, plum compote and ripe cherries combine with cinnamon, chocolate, sweet oak and a hint of leather.
• Finish: The finish is long-lasting, combining fruity warmth with delicate spice and an elegant, slightly tannic note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hunter Laing oversees Scarabus as its own collection of Islay single malts, selecting the casks and bottling the whisky. The brand name refers to a legendary place on Islay and can be interpreted from Old Norse as “rocky place”. The enigmatic symbols on the label were inspired by John Francis Campbell, an Islay-born inventor and collector of Celtic folk tales.

Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Glasgow. The company sources its own casks, has them filled with new make spirit at Scottish distilleries and, depending on the stock, stores them either at the respective distillery or in its own warehouses in Glasgow. Cask samples are assessed regularly, allowing the tasting team to decide whether a whisky should continue maturing, be transferred to another cask or be bottled.
