Hunter Laing released this limited Scarabus special bottling in 2025. The Islay single malt is finished in Bordeaux Grand Cru wine casks and bottled at 46% in its natural colour, without chill filtration, in 0.7-litre bottles.

The wine-cask finish complements the robust smoky character with dark berries and stewed plums. Toasted almonds and salted caramel enrich the profile, while oak and tannins give the long finish a dry, vinous structure.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines dark berries, stewed plums and nutty notes with earthy peat smoke.
• Palate: The palate reveals toasted almonds, cooked-down plums, earthy peat, salted caramel and oak spice.
• Finish: The long finish combines fruity sweetness, spicy oak and lingering smoke, with tannins adding a dry, vinous accent.

Distillery/Bottler:

Scarabus is one of Hunter Laing’s Islay single malt ranges. The brand was unveiled on Islay during Fèis Ìle in 2019. Its name refers to an area of the island and derives from an Old Norse expression for a rocky place. The enigmatic symbols used in its design were inspired by Islay-born inventor and folklorist John Francis Campbell.

Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd was established in Glasgow, bringing together Edition Spirits Ltd and the Premier Bond bottling operation. The family’s history in the whisky trade began with the blending business founded by Frederick Laing. As an independent bottler, Hunter Laing selects and bottles the whiskies in the Scarabus range; the single malt used for this Bordeaux Cask Edition comes from an undisclosed Islay distillery.
