Special Features:

This single malt is the original core bottling in the Scarabus range. Hunter Laing introduced it as Scarabus Specially Selected at the Fèis Ìle festival on Islay in 2019. The whisky comes from Islay, although its distillery is not disclosed.

The bottling combines the peat smoke characteristic of Scarabus with maritime and sweet impressions. It is bottled at 46% without added colouring or chill filtration. This 0.7-litre version is supplied without a tube.

Scarabus is the name of a mysterious area on Islay and can be translated from Old Norse as “rocky place”. The deliberately enigmatic symbols and overall label design draw on the work of Islay-born John Francis Campbell, who developed a sunshine recorder and collected Celtic folk tales.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines Islay peat smoke with sea salt.
• Palate: The palate follows with warming leather, stewed rhubarb and vanilla sweetness.
• Finish: The finish is rich and lingers for a long time.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd was founded in Glasgow in 2013 and continues the Laing family’s whisky tradition into its third generation. Edition Spirits and the Premier Bond bottling facility also became part of the company at that time, while Scarabus joined the portfolio in 2019 as its own range of Islay single malts.

The independent bottler sources ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, among others, and maintains filling contracts with Scottish distilleries. Hunter Laing has its own casks filled with new make spirit, after which the whisky matures either at the respective distilleries or in the company’s own warehouses in Glasgow. During maturation, the Master Blender regularly monitors the stocks and decides whether to select them for bottling, allow them to mature further or, where appropriate, transfer them to another type of cask.
