Special Features:

A two-year finish in Tawny Port casks shapes this ten-year-old whisky without masking its heavily peated character. Distilled from Optic barley in December 2012, it spent only its final two years of maturation in the Port casks. This period adds dark berries, dried fruit, honeyed sweetness and spiced nuts to the weighty, maritime-tinged smoke and oily texture.

The whisky was bottled in July 2023 at 53.8%, with 1,420 bottles released. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, dense smoke gradually gives way to raisins and dates, honey-glazed nuts and cinnamon. Pineapple and cherry emerge behind them.
• Palate: The whisky feels full and oily on the palate. Smoke accompanies blackberries, ripe oranges, plums and raisins, alongside earthy notes, salted peanuts, white pepper, honey-sweetened herbal tea and baking spices.
• Finish: The finish is long: smoke, dark fruit and delicate spice fade slowly, leaving a touch of dryness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Pär Caldenby founded the small Smögen distillery on Sweden’s west coast near Hunnebostrand, where it has made malt whisky since 2010. Inspired by bold, smoky whiskies, he developed a distinctive weighty and oily style through craft production. Smögen Whisky AB produces this distillery bottling.

Long fermentations and small copper stills are part of Caldenby’s approach. When this whisky was distilled, Smögen still used horizontal tube condensers; the change to worm-tub cooling did not begin until 2018. The stills are heated electrically, rather than by an open flame.
