For Distillery Estate Barley, Smögen used heavily peated barley grown on the distillery grounds. Distilled in autumn 2011, the whisky matured for twelve years in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and first-fill sherry hogsheads. In February 2024, Smögen bottled 1,716 bottles at a cask strength of 56.6%. The single malt is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in gift packaging.

Powerful peat smoke meets malty and mineral notes. Herbs and menthol add freshness alongside vanilla, cherries, raisins, caramel and butterscotch. Apricot, orange and nuts broaden the fruity and roasted notes, while fruitwood ash, tar, oyster shell and iodine shape the smoky, maritime side.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pinewood smoke, sweet marshmallow and peanuts meet fresh citrus fruit.
• Palate: The whisky is full-bodied and creamy on the palate. Malt and wood smoke accompany toasted oak, orange peel, vanilla and roasted almonds.
• Finish: The medium-to-long finish retains its wood smoke. Toasted oak, salt, black and white pepper, and hints of iodine, chilli and dried orange peel linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Pär Caldenby founded Smögen Whisky AB in 2009, and the distillery near Hunnebostrand on Sweden’s west coast began production in 2010. Caldenby favours small batches, long fermentation and a distinctly malty, peaty style. For this edition, barley grown on the distillery grounds gives the raw material a particularly close connection to the site. Smögen distilled the whisky and bottled it after maturation.

In 2011, Smögen was still using horizontal tube condensers. The distillery began replacing them with worm tubs in 2018. In these condensers, vapour passes through water-cooled coils.
