Special Features:

Askeim Batch No. 2 puts Golden Promise barley and triple distillation at the heart of this Swedish single malt. It matured for eight years and was bottled at cask strength of 57.2%. It is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

In contrast to Smögen’s often heavily peated style, Askeim has a malt-forward profile with very little smoke influence. Golden Promise is an older barley variety that has largely given way to higher-yielding varieties in whisky production. Its use brings the grain character of this release to the fore.

Dense malt notes and gentle sweetness are joined by orange marmalade, fresh herbs and spices. There are also impressions of roasted vegetables, a hint of smoke and notes of winter baking.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pumpernickel, peppermint and orange marmalade meet grilled aubergine and a hint of smoke.
• Palate: The whisky is fruitier and spicier on the palate than on the nose. Rye bread and jam are joined by roasted vegetables, juniper and pepper.
• Finish: The long finish recalls gingerbread, citrus zest and cinnamon, with pepper lingering in the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Pär Caldenby founded Smögen Whisky AB in 2009. The distillery is located on the Ståleröd farm near Hunnebostrand on Sweden’s west coast and has produced whisky in small batches since 2010. It is best known for its strongly peated single malts.

With the Askeim series, Smögen instead focuses on older barley varieties and restrained smoke influence. The distillery distilled the whisky for Batch No. 2 itself and bottled it as a distillery release.
