Special Features:

For PX Twin, Smögen combined whisky from two Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads, numbered 41/2014 and 43/2014. Distilled in 2014, it spent its full six years in these casks; the PX maturation was not merely a finish. The whisky was bottled at cask strength at 58.5% in 2021. The release for the German market comprises 852 bottles of 0.5 litres each. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Dark PX fruit and caramel contrast with heavy, earthy peat smoke. Tobacco, barbecue spice and salty liquorice give the sweetness a dry, robust counterpoint.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pronounced peat smoke, prune and cinnamon mingle with dark tobacco. Vanilla, raisins and a little coffee add to the impression.
• Palate: The whisky feels powerful, creamy and full-bodied on the palate. At first, ashy peat smoke and barbecue spice meet dried fruit, rum-soaked raisins and buttery caramel, alongside a warming sharpness. Earthy peat notes continue through the palate, while oak spice emerges later.
• Finish: The long, dry finish fades with salty liquorice, maritime spice and campfire smoke. Sweetness and spice linger too.

Distillery/Bottler:

Pär Caldenby founded Smögen Whisky AB in 2009 near Hunnebostrand on Sweden’s west coast. The small distillery uses heavily peated barley malt from Scotland and works in small production runs monitored by hand. Long fermentation times are intended to give the spirit a broad aromatic foundation. This whisky comes from Smögen’s own production; for PX Twin, the contents of the two hogsheads were combined and bottled as a distillery release.

When this whisky was distilled in 2014, Smögen still used horizontal shell-and-tube condensers. Caldenby had designed the equipment to limit the vapour’s contact with copper, allowing a robust spirit to develop. The distillery switched to worm tubs, with cooling coils immersed in water, only in 2018.
