For this Mission Gold release, Murray McDavid selected a Strathmill single malt distilled in 1996. After maturing in a bourbon hogshead, the whisky spent its final four years in Saint-Julien red wine barriques from Bordeaux that were being used for whisky for the first time. This extended finishing period gives the 28-year-old Speyside malt a distinctive setting for its fruit, malt and oak notes.

A total of 516 bottles were filled from casks 2110001 and 2120001 in spring 2025 at 52.9%. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring. It comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals redcurrants, leathery oak and prunes.
• Palate: On the palate, chocolatey malt combines with raspberries and set honey.
• Finish: Ripe fruit, creamy mocha and pepper linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Strathmill Distillery stands beside the River Isla in Speyside. The site was a grain mill in the early 19th century before being converted into a distillery during the whisky boom of the 1890s. The single malt in this bottling was distilled there in 1996.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin alongside Gordon Wright of Springbank. The independent bottler became known in particular for finishing whisky in wine casks. Now based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside, it is owned by Aceo Limited. For this Mission Gold release, Murray McDavid finished the long-matured Strathmill in Saint-Julien barriques before bottling the whisky.
