Hop blossoms and malt connect THE DUKE Munich Dry Gin with Bavaria’s brewing tradition. They complement a recipe of 13 organically grown botanicals centred on untreated juniper berries. These also include coriander, lemon peel, angelica root, lavender flowers, ginger, cubeb pepper and orange blossoms. Lemon peel contributes a fresh fruit note, while lavender adds a light floral accent and ginger a subtle spicy warmth.

To make the gin, the botanicals are steeped overnight in a mixture of alcohol and water to extract their aromatic compounds. The gin then undergoes two distillations, a stripping run followed by a spirit run; the distillery uses copper stills and works in small batches. Bottled at 45% alcohol, it suits a Gin & Tonic as well as a Munich Mule or Negroni Bavarese. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and is supplied with gift packaging.

Distillery/Bottler:

THE DUKE began with two friends, Max and Daniel, and their idea of making their own gin in Munich. In 2008, they started developing their recipe with a copper still in a small room in a rear courtyard. The brand name recalls Henry the Lion, the founder of Munich. In 2016, the distillery moved to a former potato distillery dating from the 19th century in Aschheim. The brick building now houses the Gläserne Manufaktur, where visitors can learn about production.

The distillery checks its botanical raw materials with every new harvest. Preparing the botanicals also involves peeling lemons by hand before macerating their peel. Munich Dry Gin is made and bottled in Aschheim, where labelling is also carried out.
