The Hearach First Fill Oloroso Cask Matured Batch 1 is the second whisky release from the Isle of Harris Distillery. This lightly peated single malt was matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso butts from José y Miguel Martín. After vatting, the whisky was married for at least 16 weeks; the batch yielded around 12,000 bottles. It was bottled at 46%, with natural colour and without chill filtration.

The distillery began working with the family-owned José y Miguel Martín company in 2015. Since then, Isle of Harris has sourced selected Oloroso butts directly from Jerez. The Oloroso used for them is dry, dark and nutty; full maturation in these casks gives the island whisky its pronounced richness.

The Oloroso influence combines with bright spice: cinnamon, orange peel and clove lead into mixed herbs and white chocolate. Delicate wood smoke, walnut shell, dried thyme, burnt orange and vanilla follow on the palate, while leather and liquorice carry the long finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, cinnamon, orange peel and clove combine with the green notes of mixed herbs and the creamy character of white chocolate.
• Palate: The palate reveals wood smoke and walnut shells. Dried thyme follows, closely pursued by burnt orange, with vanilla pod and a delicate clove note coming next.
• Finish: The finish is long, combining leather with liquorice.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Isle of Harris Distillery stands by the harbour in Tarbert and was founded by Anderson Bakewell in 2015. From the outset, his concept combined spirits production with the aim of creating long-term employment for several generations on Harris.

For this range matured entirely in Oloroso casks, the distillery produces the spirit on Harris; maturation, marrying and bottling also take place on the island. The peat level is 12 to 15 ppm.
