Special Features:

For this limited edition, the Silkie blend spent nine months finishing in two casks from the Dutch brewery Brouwersnös. The casks had previously held a Belgian-style Dubbel beer. Sliabh Liag combined five malt and grain whiskeys for the blend, including a small proportion of peated malt whiskey. The two casks yielded 806 bottles at 50%; the whiskey is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Its fruit notes range from pear, banana, raisin and plum to apricot and apple. Malty sweetness, ginger, toffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt add further layers. Light smoke and earthy spice provide a counterpoint to the sweetness in the finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers pear, banana, raisin and plum alongside malt and honey. Apricot, peach, apple and ginger add to the fruit notes, with a subtle hint of smoke in the background.
• Palate: The whiskey feels full-bodied and velvety on the palate. Dried fruit and fig mingle with ginger, toffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt; orange peel adds a slight bitterness, while the smoke remains restrained.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming. Earthy spice, dried fruit and a slightly bitter malt note fade with gentle, dry smoke.

Sliabh Liag Distillers first developed The Legendary Silkie in Donegal as a blend of sourced Irish whiskeys, before its own Ardara Distillery began producing whiskey. For Silkie, the company selects malt and grain whiskeys, blends them and bottles them under its own brand. The range draws on Donegal’s whiskey tradition and coastal stories; this special edition adds a finish in Brouwersnös beer casks.
