Sound of Sleat is the fourth chapter of the Torabhaig Legacy Series, which traces the development of the distillery’s house style. Its name comes from the narrow strait behind the distillery that separates Skye from the Scottish mainland and is known in Gaelic as Linne Shlèite. Ellis O'Connor, an artist from the Sleat peninsula, created the artwork for the label and gift packaging.

For this bottling, Torabhaig uses Concerto and Laureate malt containing more than 78 PPM of phenols in the malt. The wort ferments for 72 hours with Pinnacle MG+ yeast. The whisky then matures for five to six years exclusively in American white oak casks: 75% of the cask mix consists of first-fill bourbon barrels, 20% of new American oak hogsheads and 5% of refill bourbon barrels. The bourbon barrels hold 200 litres, and the new hogsheads hold 250 litres. The distillery measures 14.5 PPM in the bottled whisky. This edition brings together peat smoke, fruit, sweetness and maritime notes. The whisky is bottled at 46% alcohol without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Orange appears first, followed by apricot and sweet popcorn. Seaweed adds a maritime note; a hint of pipe tobacco accompanies the smoke, while honey, vanilla and sweets round out the nose.
• Palate: On the palate, lively oak spice and sweet campfire smoke meet a slightly waxy texture. Honey and vanilla sit alongside sea salt and seaweed; white pepper and sweet spices emerge towards the end.
• Finish: The finish is long and elegant, leaving honey and a maritime impression behind.

Distillery/Bottler:

Torabhaig Distillery Ltd operates the distillery in Teangue on the Sleat peninsula and produces Sound of Sleat as its own single malt bottling. An old farmstead was restored to house the distillery, where distillation began in 2017. Two copper stills and Douglas fir washbacks were built specifically for the building. Mossburn began the conversion in 2014 and includes Torabhaig in its whisky portfolio.
