Maturation in Amontillado sherry casks brings together this Oude Genever's grain base and nutty, spicy cask notes. The Amontillado sherry previously held in these casks undergoes two stages of ageing: first beneath a layer of flor yeast, then under oxidative conditions. For Special No. 42, Zuidam used a distillate made from malted barley, maize and rye. Dried fruit joins the malty notes in its flavour profile.

The genever was distilled on 31 March 2021 and bottled at 38% on 21 April 2026 after five years of maturation. The worldwide release comprises 796 bottles, each containing 1 litre. It can be enjoyed neat at room temperature or slightly chilled.

This official bottling is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. Its ochre hue comes from cask maturation.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, walnut and almond mingle with dry tobacco notes and polished oak. Juniper and a hint of orange peel add to the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, malty notes meet the sweetness of dark raisins. The sherry influence accompanies a full, balanced mouthfeel.
• Finish: A delicate oak spiciness lingers on the finish, accompanied by Amontillado character.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zuidam Distillers is an independent family distillery in Baarle-Nassau in the Netherlands. The second generation now runs the business. The distillery makes its own distillates and extracts and processes them in-house. Alongside genever, its range includes whisky, gin, rum and liqueurs.

Maize, rye and malted barley form the basis of Zuidam's classic Old Genever. The fresh grain spirit undergoes three distillations in a small pot still. Zuidam then redistils a portion with juniper, liquorice and anise before combining the grain and botanical distillates. This method brings together a grain-forward base and genever's aromatic ingredients.
