Royal Oak combines maturation in ex-bourbon casks with a deliberate selection of robust Coffey still distillates. St. Lucia Distillers draws these from the lower trays of a 45-tray distillation column. The selected distillates have an aromatic weight that makes them suited to extended cask ageing.

The rum is made from molasses. The blend brings together rums matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks. Tropical ageing shapes its fruity, spicy character and pronounced oak component. Royal Oak is offered at 40% alcohol in a bottle containing 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, plums and raisins mingle with exotic spices. The oak adds a buttery note.
• Palate: The rum is full-bodied and intense on the palate. Caramel and sultanas lend fruity sweetness, while spicy oak provides a distinct counterpoint.
• Finish: Delicate spice lingers through the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

St. Lucia Distillers is located in the Roseau Valley on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. The company was formed in 1972 through the merger of the Dennery and Roseau distilleries, bringing together the Barnard family's plantation and the Geest operation. The rum produced at the time, Denros Bounty, already reflected this connection in its name. The distillery's history is therefore closely linked to the processing of molasses from the island's former sugar industry.

The distillery also takes practical measures to make use of resources: it runs a bottle recycling programme and fires its boilers mainly with recovered waste oil. A steam turbine installation uses steam from the boilers to generate electricity for the distillery.
