Familia 2007 is part of a rum range through which the Quevedo family honours the legacy of its founder, Manuel Quevedo Alemán. For Familia, Aldea uses only Guarapo, freshly pressed sugar cane juice, rather than molasses. Production involves blending rum from different casks during maturation; French oak casks shape the range.

Distilled on La Palma, this rum comes from the 2007 vintage. Its character combines spicy and fruity impressions with tobacco and a restrained earthy warmth. It contains no colouring and has an alcohol content of 43%. The 0.7-litre bottle is supplied in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, cinnamon and dried fruit combine with a dark, slightly balsamic note.
• Palate: Tobacco and dry spice notes define the palate. A subtle earthy warmth complements these impressions.
• Finish: The long finish remains spicy and dry, with lingering tobacco notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

The history of Destilerías Aldea began on Gran Canaria, where Manuel Quevedo Alemán founded Destilería San Nicolás in 1936 after gaining experience in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Madeira. In the mid-1950s, his son Carmelo moved the business to San Andrés y Sauces on La Palma, where sugar cane was still grown. The fourth generation of the family has worked in the company since the early 1990s, expanding the range to include aged rums and small special releases.

Aldea uses juice from the first pressing of the sugar cane. Controlled fermentation can take up to 30 hours, followed by distillation over a wood fire that the master distiller manages by hand. Alongside its original 1936 equipment, the distillery now uses a larger replica built in 2021. In the cask warehouse, José Quevedo regularly tastes the rums and decides when they should be bottled or blended together for further maturation. Aldea uses spring water from Marcos y Cordero to bring the rums to drinking strength; they then rest for at least two months.
