Special Features:

Selected for Germany, this single-cask rum dates from 2013 and matured for ten years in the tropical climate of La Réunion. Savanna produced it from molasses on its C20 column still and aged it in a French oak cask previously used for Cognac. Maturation took place in humid ageing cellar number 4. In 2024, the rum from cask #778 yielded 640 bottles at 49.8%. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Its fruity character ranges from strawberry and raisin to very ripe orange. Caramel and baked-goods notes sit alongside resinous, herbal and earthy impressions. With air, the rum becomes rounder and develops a broader aromatic range. The Unshared Cask Collection dedicates individual casks to specific markets; the presentation of this German release features an ornate ghost pipefish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Varnish and solvent notes appear initially alongside strawberry, fruit sweets and raisins. With air, forest floor, mushrooms and damp moss emerge. Later, vanilla, sweet pancake batter and cake with candied fruit join them. Very ripe orange combines with camphor, Ylang-Ylang and an impression reminiscent of fresh printing ink. A slight hint of acetone complements the aromas.
• Palate: The rum feels slightly syrupy, with the alcohol remaining restrained. Strawberry opens the palate, followed by grape and baked apple. Caramel, alcohol-soaked raisins and brioche lend a baked-goods character. With air, the flavours become rounder and more intense. Resin, eucalyptus and very ripe fruit accompany a medicinal streak and hints of varnish. Liquorice adds a moderately salty note.
• Finish: Salty liquorice notes, ripe banana and subtle hints of varnish linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Savanna was founded on La Réunion in 1870 and moved to its current site at Bois-Rouge in Saint-André in 1992. The distillery has belonged to Réunionnaise du Rhum since December 2012. It processes both molasses and fresh sugarcane juice, producing traditional, light, agricole and particularly aromatic rum styles.

Its production methods include in-house cultivated yeasts and various distillation systems, including stainless steel and copper columns as well as a copper Savalle column. Savanna matures rum in French oak casks previously used for Cognac and uses additional wine and spirit casks for selected bottlings. Since 2003, the distillery has marketed rum under its own Savanna brand; previously, most of its production went to other bottlers. This single-cask release is an official Savanna bottling.
