Special Features:

Finishing in former peated whisky casks gives this Versailles rum its smoky character. It was distilled in 2007 in a wooden pot still in Guyana. After 16 years of maturation, the rum was bottled in 2024 for Rum Nation's Small Batch Rare Rums range. The finishing period brings agave notes and smoke to the full-bodied rum, while a dry, earthy peat character emerges on the palate.

Rums from casks 16, 17, 18 and 21 were blended for this bottling. The release comprises 1,136 individually numbered bottles. The rum was bottled at a cask strength of 58.2%, without chill filtration or added colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle has a glass stopper and comes in a gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, agave notes and light smoke recall mezcal. Sweet notes of ripe pineapple and papaya are joined by gentle spice with cinnamon and cloves.
• Palate: Peat is pronounced on the palate. The rum is dry and earthy, with an oily richness, sea salt and a flavour reminiscent of sour sweets.
• Finish: The long finish retains the oily richness and leaves notes of eucalyptus and star anise.

Distillery/Bottler:

Versailles refers here to a historic still now located at Diamond in Guyana. The Single Wooden Pot Still originated at the former Versailles estate on the west bank of the Demerara and reached Diamond via Enmore and Uitvlugt. Demerara Distillers Limited continues to operate it. Its wooden distillation chamber, made from locally sourced Greenheart wood, and its copper neck represent a rare still design that keeps Guyana's rum history alive.

Fabio Rossi founded Rum Nation in 1999 to showcase the different rum styles of individual countries of origin. The brand selects rums from various distilleries rather than operating a distillery of its own. The Rare Rums range focuses on small releases bottled at cask strength, identifying the still and cask numbers. Mac Y Spirits handled the blending and bottling of this Versailles rum. The stamp-like label designs reflect the rum's country of origin.
