Double-charred American oak casks give Zacapa Edición Negra its distinctly smoky character. Inspired by Guatemala’s volcanic landscape, this edition brings together rums aged between six and 24 years. This range refers to the components of the blend, not to a single age for the finished rum.

Ageing in the Sistema Solera brings together several cask influences. Edición Negra uses American oak casks previously filled with whiskey, including charred casks, alongside former Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximénez wine casks. Additional former whiskey casks are specially charred and smoked. This cask treatment shapes the combination of smoke, wood and spice, balanced by chocolate and dried fruit.

This rum is bottled at 43% and is offered here in a 0.7-litre bottle without a presentation tube. It can be enjoyed neat or over ice and also adds a smoky note to classic cocktails made with dark spirits.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zacapa was created in 1976 to mark the centenary of the Guatemalan town of the same name. Production begins with sugar cane from the south of the country: rather than molasses, Zacapa uses the first pressing of the cane. Fermentation uses a yeast strain originally derived from pineapple.

After distillation, the rum travels from the lowlands to the House Above the Clouds ageing warehouse, at an altitude of around 2,300 metres. There it matures in a cooler, humid mountain climate. Master Blender Lorena Vásquez creates the blends, selecting casks with different previous contents and levels of toasting. This allows her to shape the aromatic and structural characteristics of each Zacapa bottling. Bottling takes place in Mixco.
